The Problem with Cyberattacks

Cyberattacks are on the Rise

It’s no surprise that cyberattacks can and may happen. However, the Shadowserver Foundation has reported that a brute force attack campaign by malicious actors has been ongoing since January. This vicious attack has targeted edge security services, resulting in serious problems for cybersecurity teams. Any compromised devices may be used for data theft, botnet integration, or illegal network access.

What are the Consequences of a Cyberattack?

Thomas Richards, a network and red team practice director at Black Duck Software states that an attack on this scale is worrisome. Attackers could leverage access to the compromised device in malicious intent: they could disable internet access to an organization, or disrupt networks to facilitate their own access into the network. Attacks could also have valid accounts locked out through numerous log in attempts. Devices that are old and outdated are especially vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Why are these Attacks so Dangerous?

Brute force attacks are so effective because of how they function. These attacks are automated, so they are implemented at a scale. This leads to the question: how many times will an organization be penetrated this way, and will the security team know when it happens?

Attackers now deploy botnets to do their dirty work: the bots test thousands of password guesses until they finally break through and enter the system.

Can AI Help Prevent Cyberattacks?

AI is a double edge sword. Hackers use it to their advantage and to evolve their tactics. However, such tools also hold potential to be a game-changer in defending against cyberattacks. A security team may use an AI tool to detect anomalies, analyze behavior, and automate responses to attacks in real time.

Jason Soroko, senior vice president of product at Sectigo, acknowledges that AI could help defenses by detecting anomalies in login patterns, and throttle suspicious activities. However, it is advices that strong authentication should remain the top priority. AI still has limits, which is why security teams should know how to operate their AI tools and how to properly utilize them in the event of an attack.
