Dropbox, which positioned itself as a provider of cheap cloud storage for consumers, has launched a new service offering called Teams targeted to small and mid-sized. However, Small and Medium businesses considering the service need to keep in mind that this service lacks key compliance certifications many businesses need to comply with, failure to do so may be leaving them open to significant financial penalties.
The Dropbox for Teams cloud storage service does not meet the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Payment Card Industry (PCI), or the Sarbanes-Oxley law. This has been confirmed by the executives and media representatives from Dropbox.
Small and Medium business need to make sure if they are considering moving data to “the cloud” that is it a right decision for their data. Cost is only one of many factors to consider. Data security, regulatory requirements, data backup, reliability, and even ownership of the data that is uploaded to the cloud are important factors.
